Is it legal for a Automotive insurance company to require medical records?

Question by glitterchica: Is it legal for a Automotive insurance company to require medical records?
I'm in the State of Louisiana. I was without Automotive insurance because I was in the hospital and couldn't drive for risk of an accident after I got out. I went back to my insurance company today and they are telling me that I have to show something saying I was in the hospital, or have a doctor write up why I was in the hospital. I thought medical records were private.
